UNDP Tanzania has adopted a systematic approach to its development initiatives, reorganizing its operational framework through a portfolio strategy. This strategic shift is designed to provide a comprehensive view of intended impacts and promote a unified approach towards their achievement.

One of the portfolios established is the Youth Catalyst Portfolio, aimed at empowering youth as key contributors to national development across various sectors.

A key initiative within this portfolio is the FUNGUO Innovation Programme, designed to stimulate innovation, investment, and impact by supporting youth-led startups and early-stage innovative businesses.

The FUNGUO programme is dedicated to advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Tanzania through an integrated approach that nurtures impact-driven startups and innovative Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). FUNGUO aims to overcome challenges within the innovation ecosystem, creating a supportive environment for innovators and entrepreneurs.

The programme’s impact theory suggests that supporting and scaling startups and innovative MSMEs will generate jobs, especially for women and youth, enhance income, improve livelihoods, and promote sustainable and inclusive development.

FUNGUO, co-funded by the European Union (through the BEGIN Programme), the British Government (through the Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships, ATIP) and UNDP, is implemented by UNDP Tanzania in partnership with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).

This collaborative and multi-stakeholder approach ensures a comprehensive and impactful intervention in Tanzania’s innovation ecosystem. In close collaboration with the Tanzanian Commission of Science and Technology (COSTECH) and other government agencies, FUNGUO aims to significantly contribute to the country’s sustainable development goals by fostering a supportive environment for startups and innovative MSMEs.

FUNGUO’s vision is to create lasting change by addressing current challenges and laying the foundation for a thriving innovation landscape that aligns with Tanzania’s developmental aspirations.

FUNGUO’s collaborative efforts with key partners highlight its commitment to catalysing positive and sustainable impacts, positioning it as a crucial player in the country’s path towards innovation-led growth and inclusive development.
